We brewed a beer from 100% huskless barley

–FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE–

MODIST BREWING CO. UTILIZES UNIQUE BREWING SYSTEM TO BREW A BEER MADE FROM 100% EXPERIMENTAL HUSKLESS BARLEY

North Loop, MPLS, MN – September 27th, 2017

We at Modist Brewing have proudly partnered with the brains over at BSG CraftBrewing to brew a beer made entirely from a highly experimental huskless barley.  In an attempt to understand the full scope of the huskless barley’s potential benefits to a beer’s flavor, mouthfeel and stability, BSG worked with us because of our unique brewing system. Because Modist uses a mash filter instead of a lauter tun, we don’t depend on the husk of the grain to help separate the liquid from solid – making us a perfect partner for this experiment.  A perfect fit for our Deviation Series of innovative taproom-only beers, Deviation 010 will be on tap at Modist beginning Friday, September 29th at noon.

ABOUT THE MALT

The variety of barley used, known as CDC Clear, was developed and bred without the hull (or husk) that normally surrounds a kernel of barley. The hull of traditional barley is typically necessary in the brewing process to aide in the separation of liquid from solid in the lautering process.  However, the hull can also impart unwanted flavors to the beer such as bitter tannins. BSG seeks to determine if the addition of CDC Clear into a typical malt bill could provide benefits to such things as flavor, mouthfeel, and stability.

ABOUT THE BEER

Deviation 010 is a smooth, full-flavored lager brewed with CDC Clear malt, lightly hopped with Denali, Huell Melon, and Bravo, and then fermented with our house lager strain. It’s lightly fruity, bready, drinkable, and clocks in at 5.5% ABV.  It’s good. Come and try it.

16 ounces of German Fatcap!

–FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE–

MODIST BREWING CO. ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF GERMAN FATCAP, A GERMAN IPA, INTO 16 OZ CANS. EACH 4 PACK WILL FEATURE 4 UNIQUE CAN DESIGNS.

North Loop, MPLS, MN – September 1st, 2017

German Fatcap – our super limited, super seasonal, German IPA – will be hitting select liquor store shelves on Wednesday, September 6th. Named after a type of spraypaint nozzle, the artwork on the can’s front pays tribute to the classic design of American spraypaint cans – while the artwork on the back features 4 distinctly different rail cars covered with different subway art styles. The beer will also be available to try in our taproom beginning Tuesday, September 5th.

ABOUT THE DESIGN

German Fatcap takes its name from a certain type of spraypaint nozzle (colloquially known as caps), which gained popularity in the graffiti world for their ability to quickly unload large amounts of paint in a clean circle the size of a basketball. German Fatcap’s artwork is a tribute to both the designs of classic American spraypaint cans and the artists who used them. Burlesque of North America‘s Wes Winship and Mike Davis created this sharp tribute with four distinct back designs featuring four distinct styles of subway art over the outline of an R142 car from the IRT division of the New York City Subway.

ABOUT THE BEER

German Fatcap is our answer to an Octoberfest beer. A crispy malty festbier brewed with a German water profile, German malts, German hops, and German yeast – then aggresively hopped like an American IPA. Its bold hop character balances the rich malt backbone to create thick a FAT CAP of aromatic foam.
