Previously Unknown Species… How is that Spelt?

We love making new friends, especially when those new friendships lead to the creation of crazy beers. We made some friends recently with just that goal in mind, crazy beers. Hop Butcher, a leading brewery coming out of the brewing mecca of the Chicagoland area, stopped up here a few weeks back. We collaborated on a few ideas and ultimately decided to make a beer that none of us had ever seen before.

Based off that notion, Previously Unknown Species, a Double Dry Hopped, Double IPA, was brewed with a whole lot of Spelt, about 60% to more accurate, (thanks, in large part, to our Mash Filter) combined with some scrumptious Oat malts. No barley. This beer has no barley. What’s so great about Spelt malts? Well, Spelt is an ancient grain that is known to possess a bunch of health benefits. For this reason, Spelt was the favorite grain of the medieval pioneers of today’s health movement and is considered highly digestible and conducive to good health. #BeerForYourHealth

There are also two things that Hop Butcher and Modist are known for, IPA’s. We knew at the end of the day that we wanted to make a killer IPA. With that in mind, Hop Butcher muled a good amount of a hop variety that we haven’t really played around with much, Vic Secret (New Zealand hop varietal), to Minnesota specifically for us to use in this beer. Oh, and we used it alright. We combined Hop Butcher’s Vic Secret with our Sabro pellets and Cryo Sabro because you can never have too much Sabro, right? In total, we added more than 7lbs of hops per barrel. To add an additional layer of complexity, we blended Vermont yeast (Conan) and London Ale 3 which added some great stone fruit characteristics to the nose. and The results of all of this experimenting come in the form of aromas of passion fruit, pineapple, coconut, tropical fruits, and a touch of apricot and peach. Many of those aromas carry through to the flavor with a nice touch of earthy pine at the end to help balance out those juicy fruit notes.

To showcase this new “species” of beer, we had to make a decision on how the overall design and look of the beer would be. When new species begin to emerge, they don’t happen overnight, they are created from small, minor changes at the molecular level, read Modified, often within the genes or DNA. With that in mind, we figured a human genome map would be the perfect representation of those minute changes.

We’re all extremely excited at how Previously Unknown Species turned out! We invite you to swing in and give a try yourself! You can find it on tap here at the brewery beginning on Saturday, May 11th. We will also have a limited number of crowlers available for you to take home.

High Art – Drink it, Peel it, Make it, Win it

Here at Modist, we love beer… a lot, like, a lot a lot, like, we’re creating our careers specifically around beer. If you haven’t noticed, though, we also really really love art. We try to promote it in as many ways as possible. We show art from local artists on our taproom walls, we work with artists to design our labels, and we even recently used art to help raise over $10,000 for Reach for the Stars, and sent a bunch of kids to Space Camp! And now we want to branch out even more and see what you hobby artists have to show.

Introducing, High Art, a NE Rice IPA brewed with brown rice, oats, and MN red wheat, then hopped with Cryo Mosaic, Strata, and Idaho 7. Not only is this a new take on an IPA, with 45% of the malt bill being brown rice (and yet another beer that’s made without barley), but it also comes with a built-in challenge. Grab yourself a 4 pack and peel off all the labels and arrange them on a large piece of paper, a slab of plywood, a sheet of metal, your best friend’s back, or wherever, really. Connect the gold frame to make an actual frame and start creating art. Paint, mixed media, markers, or maybe even pottery? I don’t know, you’re the artist, let those creative juices flow! Releasing in cans beginning on Monday, April 29th, and on tap at the brewing on Saturday, April 27th.

Once you’ve finished your masterpiece, snap a photo of it and post it on social media. Tag @modistbrewing and #highart. We will pick our favorite(s) and give away some delicious beer! How much beer you ask? Well, the top 3 get a full case of beer of any combination of our flagship beers, Dreamyard, False Pattern, and First Call.

Can’t find a 4 pack or only seeing it sold as singles? Well, each label is numbered 1-4 (see images above) so that, if you need to, you can shop around and make your own four-pack. Still unable to make it work, never fear friends, you can download the template here and print it yourself, or throw it into your favorite digital designing program and go hog wild!

All submissions need to be made before 11:59 pm on Sunday, May 12th. No purchase necessary to enter. Must be at least 21 years old to be eligible to win. Winners must be able to arrange for local pick up only, no shipping of beers will be available. Artwork must be posted to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. The image must be tagged with @modistbrewing and contain #highart in the comment/description.

I think the only thing you need to know now is where to get the beer so that you can drink it and start creating magic. Check back on Friday, April 26th to see the full delivery schedule right here at this here blog post.

Another Sweet Dangerous Man Collaboration

🐝🍯🔥New Beers🔥🍯🐝 Dropping this weekend! We teamed up with Dangerous Man to create two new beers that are equal parts awesome and unique. Ours, Apiary Drip, is a Double Dry Hopped Honey IPA made from 45% local honey from Ames Farm and dry-hopped with Simcoe, Sabro, Strata, and Cryo Simco and Strata. Juicy notes of pineapple, honey, grapefruit, and guava. Comes in at 8.4% ABV, and we’ve got 80 crowlers available for this weekend. They’ll go quick.

Dangerous Man’s version, Apiary Drop, is a Double Dry-Hopped Triple IPA that weighs in at a hefty 10% ABV with 120Lbs of Ames Farm honey.

BOTH are dropping on Saturday, April 6th at our respective taprooms. Come try both and get your healthy dose of honey for the weekend.
