A blue beer and Fruit City

This Saturday = a double dose of new beers. Check out these wallops:

On the left.. Tropic Level: Blue. It’s a 9.5% abv Tiki Style DIPA that was inspired by the classic “Blue Hawaii” tiki cocktail. It’s brewed w/ pineapple, tangerine, coconut, milk sugar, and raw cane sugar – then dry hopped w/ Denali and Cryo Sabro to amplify the tropical pineapple and coconut aromas and flavors. And also it’s blue.

On the right… Fruit City, an apricot and peach fruited smoothie style sour ale. It’s a smooth and fluffy wheat malt based beer with a touch of creamy milk sugar and a ludicrous amount of apricots & peaches.

Both are available at noon on Saturday with limited crowlers available. You can also roller skate with the MN Roller Girls starting at 2 pm. What a day.

Introducing Boozehound Barrel Aged Old Fashioned Ale!

MODIST BREWING CO. AND PARLOUR BAR ANNOUNCE RELEASE OF BOOZEHOUND, A BARREL AGED OLD FASHIONED ALE

At 40 proof, Boozehound is made from a base that features a Modist brewed spirit – a new category of alcohol

NORTH LOOP, MINNEAPOLIS, MAY 14, 2019 — Nearly one year in the making, the people of Modist Brewing and Parlour Bar are proud to announce the arrival of Boozehound, a one-of-a-kind fusion of beer and spirits. Boozehound is made from a bourbon mash that’s brewed and fermented as a beer, aged in bourbon barrels, then served as an Old Fashioned. Boozehound will release on tap at Modist’s North Loop Minneapolis taproom on Wednesday, May 22nd and at Parlour Bar Minneapolis and St Paul on Thursday, May 23rd.

The project began when Parlour Bar, well known for having one of the best Old Fashioneds around, contacted Modist, well known for pushing the boundaries of what beer can be, to see if they could find a good use for some hand selected 9-12 year old level 4 char Knob Creek barrels. Once he stopped drooling, Modist Brewing’s Co-Founder/Head Brewer Keigan Knee pitched the idea of launching a new type of alcohol called brewed spirits* he had been brainstorming for a long time. “I’ve been sitting on this idea for a while, and the barrels that Jesse [Held, Bar Consultant of Jester Concepts] had picked out were perfect. Based on the barrels and the pedigree of their cocktails, we decided a bourbon brewed spirit presented as an Old Fashioned was the way to go,” said Keigan.

Because of Modist’s mash filter powered brewing system, they were able to replicate an exact bourbon grain bill recipe that they brewed and fermented as a beer. Using an ale yeast strain with high alcohol tolerance, the beer reached 20% alcohol by volume (40 proof) before being transferred to the barrels for aging. Also put in the barrels was a special type of Mexican raw sugar called Piloncillo, which is a staple ingredient of Parlour’s Old Fashioneds.

After aging in barrels for nearly a year, Boozehound was transferred to kegs for its official debut this May. The finished product will be served from the tap with a splash of bitters and garnished with orange peel. It will be available on draft for a limited time at Modist, Parlour Minneapolis, Borough, and Parlour St Paul.

*About Brewed Spirits

Brewed Spirits is Modist’s coined name for a style of beer that is made to replicate a traditional spirit. By using an identical grain mash bill or ingredient base of a typical style of liquor, the goal of a brewed spirit is to get as close as possible to creating a “spirit,” while working within the legal limitations of beer. After successfully creating a bourbon base for what became Boozehound, Modist now plans to launch a series of other brewed spirits, including several different types of whiskey (including 100% rye), tequila, and rum.

About Modist Brewing Co.

Modist opened in the North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis in April of 2016 aiming to modify beer and how it is perceived by defying rules and expectations. Utilizing a mash filter powered brewing system, they push past traditional brewing by embracing creativity and unconstrained experimentation. Modist showcases their innovative spirit via the creation of a series of never seen before beers, including their flagship brews: Dreamyard (hazy ipa made from entirely oats and wheat sans barley), False Pattern (hazy pale ale brewed from oats), and First Call (an oat based coffee lager that’s blonde in color).

In their first year of business, Modist was named both the Best New Brewery in Minnesota by Growler Magazine as well as one of “The 50 Best Breweries in the United States” by BeerAdvocate. In the time since opening, they’ve received continuous accolades including recently being named Minnesota’s Most Innovative Brewery, as well as a multitude of individual beer awards.

About Parlour Bar, Minneapolis and Saint Paul

Parlour, located directly below Borough in Minneapolis, set a new standard for bartending and cocktail creation in the Twin Cities. The large bar features tufted banquettes and intimate tables. The craft cocktail menu has its foundation in the classics, using freshly squeezed juice, house-made syrups, elixirs, and rare artisanal spirits. A brief food menu featuring fare from Borough includes elevated bar snacks, including a legendary burger.

In April 2018, Parlour St. Paul joined the West 7th Neighborhood. Taking all of the things that made Parlour Minneapolis what it is, the burger, old fashioned and atmosphere, the new space is larger along with the menu. A decadent menu is available at brunch and dinner, complete with all-day eggs, sandwiches, and a selection of shareable plates.

DDH Indacouch Double IPA comin at ya

Yo. We’re happy to announce something you’ve all been waiting for: we’re releasing a beer with a label designed after your Great Aunt Jean’s ugly sofa. Introducing Double Dry Hopped Indacouch Double IPA – a new take on an old fave that guarantees to easily bake right in to a long night on the couch.

It’s an 8.5% ABV DIPA made from a Maris Otter barley and malted oat mash, then whirlpool hopped with our hand-selected dank Mosaic hops, then double dry hopped with sticky Galaxy hops and Cryo Mosaic. Heavy aromas of dank pineapple and peach, ripe mango, lemon rind and some tasty kush. Soft mouthfeel with slight bitterness. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

It’ll be on tap beginning this Saturday, March 9th, and hit liquor store shelves beginning Monday, March 11th.

Beers, Books, and Babes on Women’s Day

We’re celebrating International Women’s Day the only way we know how: releasing a ground-breaking beer to benefit two change-making causes. On Friday, March 8th we’ll be releasing our first ZERO IBU hazy IPA that we’re calling “Has that line ever worked for you before?!” It was proudly designed, brewed, and named by the women of Modist, and we’ve proudly decided to donate $1 of each pint sold to Pink Boots Society to support their effort to support women in the beer industry, AND $1 of each pint sold will be donated  to And Now She Rises, a local non-profit that provides resources to domestic abuse shelters.

We’ll be celebrating the release beginning at 6 PM with some badass lady DJs followed by a very special performance from the one and only Ashley Dubose. The event will also kick off a BOOK DRIVE! Beginning on International Women’s Day and continuing through the month of March, Modist will be collecting donations of any and all books that And Now She Rises will give directly to the libraries of local women’s shelters.

RSVP on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/events/2398545240368645/

More details below.

ABOUT THE BEER

“Has that line ever worked for you before?” is a hazy IPA brewed with a special Pink Boots Society hop blend, Strata, and ZERO bittering hops (cause feminism and equality aren’t about bitterness yo). It’ll be on tap with a limited amount of crowlers available to take home that feature the above artwork.

ABOUT THE MUSIC

The celebration will feature a performance from the one and only Ashley Dubose. Ashley is probably most widely known for her hit single, “Intoxicated”, and for her participation in Season 5 of NBC’s The Voice.

Ashley began singing and writing music at the age of 10 years old, eventually finding her way to a 2013 audition on NBC’s The Voice.  Her blind audition compelled all four celebrity coaches to turn their chairs and vie for her to be on their team. Ashley chose Team Adam and went on to become a top 32 contestant on the show. After her participation on the The Voice, Ashley returned home to begin working on her second body of work which would later be known as Be You.  Ashley released Be You in March of  2015.

In 2014, Ashley was chosen “Best Vocalist (Female)” by one of the most respected news and entertainment sources in her hometown, City Pages, for their annual Best of the Twin Cities magazine issue. Always a dreamer and determined woman, Ashley is working to spread feel-good music to the masses, with dreams of one day realizing Cee-Lo Green’s 2013 prediction that he would be routing for Ashley “front row at the Grammys!”

Ashley DuBose is realizing her childhood dream. She is determined to be a living example to her daughter that when you fuel a dream with heart and action, that dream will, in time, become reality. (Bio from Ashley’s website)

ABOUT THE CAUSE(S)

From And Now She Rises:

Everyone – regardless of economic status, race, age or religion is affected. In fact, the FBI estimates violence will occur during the course of two-thirds of marriages. And because domestic abuse isn’t always physical––it can be verbal attacks, emotional manipulation, extreme isolation and financial control––it doesn’t always leave marks we can see. That’s why the CDC has called this a hidden epidemic and a “serious public health problem.”

At And Now She Rises, we think the answer (or the ANSR, ahem) is up to the public too.

Only a woman can pull herself out of an abusive situation, but moving forward from that point on requires community… from safety-plans for the hours immediately after she escapes to the support groups she may need to rely on for years afterward; from legal help to housing logistics to learning how to engage in healthy relationships again. And most important of all: understanding. A survivor needs our willingness to see her reality and circle the wagons around her.

Together we can help turn a woman’s pain into power. And that kind of positivity also affects the whole world.

Join us.

DEFWISH IMPERIAL STOUT IS HERE.

Releasing in the taproom Saturday, January 26th: Defwish, an imperial stout with almonds, coconut, toasted coconut, and cacao nibs. Defwish will go on tap at noon with limited bottles available for purchase (limit 2 person). 11.2 % ABV. The label has shooting star skulls.

A beer, made from bagels, to help fight food waste.

Modist Brewing Company, Rise Bagel Co., and TC Food Justice are pleased to present a very special collaboration beer: No Bagel Wasted. A beer, made from bagels, to help TC Food Justice‘s effort to reduce food waste and hunger!

Instead of letting any excess bagels end up in a garbage graveyard, Rise and Modist began collecting the bagels in an effort to do what any responsible people would do: turn them into beer. Over the course of about a month, Rise and Modist were able to collect 150+ lbs of bagels that were then ground into a flour that formed the malt bill of No Bagel Wasted.

The beer, brewed from Rise Bagels along with some White Clover honey, is a toasty, easy-drinking lager that will go on tap at Modist on January 26th. 10% of all proceeds from the beer will be donated to Twin Cities Food Justice – a 100% volunteer organization that works tirelessly to help reduce food waste and hunger.
